Kitchen lighting layers
Three layers make a kitchen: ambient (recessed cans on even spacing), task (under-cabinet strips that put light on the counters where your body blocks the ceiling light), and accent (pendants over the island, a statement fixture over the table). Most kitchens we see are under-lit at the counters and over-lit in the middle of the floor — the fix is usually more under-cabinet light and better placement, not more watts.
Controls matter as much as fixtures: switching grouped by zone, dimmers where meals and moods change, and outlet and switch placement planned with the layout so you're not reaching across a hot pan to the only switch in the room.
Bathroom lighting layers
Bathrooms want light where faces are: vertical fixtures or sconces at mirror height both sides, or a well-placed bar above — overhead-only mirror light casts the shadows everyone hates. Add a general ceiling layer for the room and, in primary baths, a low warm night-light path that won't wake you fully at 3 a.m.
All bathroom lighting near water must be rated for the location, and exhaust fans should be sized and vented to move our humid air out — we check both while the walls are open, because ventilation is lighting's quiet partner in a Florida bathroom.

Can you add under-cabinet lighting to an existing kitchen?
Usually yes — modern LED strips install under existing cabinets, with power either from a nearby outlet or a small dedicated circuit. It's one of the highest-impact upgrades per dollar in a kitchen that's otherwise staying as-is.
What color temperature should kitchen and bath lighting be?
A consistent warm-neutral (around 3000K) across all the fixtures in the room reads clean and flattering; mixing color temperatures is what makes rooms feel off. In bathrooms, slightly warmer at the mirror flatters skin. We keep each room on one temperature.
Do pendant lights over an island need special wiring?
They need a junction point per fixture, usually boxed in the ceiling — straightforward during a remodel, and still very doable in a finished ceiling with a little patching. Height and spacing matter more than the wiring; we hang them for your eye level, not the catalog's.
Can you fix a bathroom that's always damp?
Often — the usual culprit is an undersized or poorly vented exhaust fan that dumps into the attic instead of outside. We size the fan to the room, vent it properly, and put it on a timer or humidity control so it actually runs long enough to matter.
